Both Iago and Roderigo act to destroy Othello out of jealousy, with disastrous consequences. Jealousy is ever-present in Shakespeares Othello. Othello is also not the only character in Othello to feel jealousy. Yet when Othello is overcome by jealousy, he does become beast-like, falling into epileptic fits that rob him of the ability to speak intelligibly. Karl Zender thinks that Othello’s thoughts regarding his wife’s affair with Cassio only intensify despite his pleas. Iago will begin to sow doubt in Othello’s mind at this point. Iago hopes that Othello will not have any resentment against him in the future.
Later in the scene, alone on the stage after Emilia has given him Desdemona's handkerchief, Iago reveals his plan for using the handkerchief to deepen Othello's jealousy. While the prejudiced characters in the play denigrate Othello as an animal or a beast based on his race, Othello's obvious honor and intelligence makes these attacks obviously ridiculous. Jealousy is at the heart of the plot, and Othello’s downfall directly results from it. In other words, Othello shouldn't be jealous, but if he's not, Desdemona is likely to take advantage of him.
But Iago instead provides the circumstantial evidence of the handkerchief, which Othello, consumed by his jealousy, accepts as a substitute for "ocular proof." Othello's jealousy impedes his ability to distinguish between reality and appearance. For instance, at one point Othello demands that Iago provide "ocular proof" of Desdemona's infidelity-he demands to see reality.
